Dating is considered to be a dignified way of knowing each other and it is the right of every individual to have a date of his/her choice. Sometimes, people wishing to avoid any controversies and complications in dating, date a known person within their community. But they forget that they sacrifice their right of choice in life. The world is still filled with people who are highly conservative believing in caste, creed, race and culture. However forward the world is moving, these back benchers are still holding their adamant views. They wear blinkers and refuse to even think of their kids getting involved in interracial dating.
The interracial couples, particularly women, face the following struggles:
Refusal to accept by parents
Refusal to accept by peers and friends
Refusal to accept by the community
Raising eyebrows and adverse comments by passerby
Fear of future of the inter racial kids
While most parents and relatives agree that dating is an approved method of the western world to select a partner, some of the parents who are having pride of their race and culture refuse to give their nod for such dating. They think that they are saviors’ of their race and culture and become blind towards the liking of their daughters. Some of the parents may quote that while they are accepting the choice of their daughter, the relatives may object to such inter racial dating. Women share secrets with their peers and friends more than men. For them opinion of them matters. Women may think that their close friends and peers may not be happy about the choice they have made and initially they would like to suppress the matter of their dating. The other category women could face struggle would be from their community who may frown at inter racial relationships. Leave alone the disapproval by parents, friends and community, in inter racial dating, women may be shocked to see passerby raising their eyebrows and making adverse comments which would not be palatable at all. The last category of struggle women foresee would be that her inter racial children may encounter problems in this world. Though their fear is baseless, these nagging worries may make them say ‘No’ to inter racial dating and relationship.
Women fond of having interracial dating must be aware of these social problems, they may encounter. If she consciously chooses a dating partner from another race may be due to emotional, intellectual reasons or love at first sight, she has every right to pursue the date. Of course, she can always try to convince her parents who do not believe in interracial dating, by talking to them and reasoning out her choice of date.
Most parents come around and get convinced with the choice of their daughter. But, you cannot be convincing your peers, friends, and community at large about your choice. It’s your date and your life and be convinced that nobody else in this world can dictate to you about having choice of date.
